Spring is here and as temperatures increase so do the chances of tick encounters for both people and their dogs.
Bacteria and protozoa associated with ticks can sicken both people and dogs, but some affect only dogs. In New Jersey, we currently have no statewide data on these dog-specific disease agents, so we don’t know how common or widespread they are.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 so Rutgers’ NJ Ticks 4 Science! can begin testing ticks for 2 veterinary disease agents, Hepatozoon americanum, transmitted by Gulf Coast ticks, a new tick species in New Jersey, and Ehrlichia canis, transmitted by brown dog ticks, a tick species that thrives only indoors in New Jersey. Brown dog ticks used to be common in New Jersey 80 years ago and were recently detected again.
