Open and Affordable Textbook (OAT) Program General Fund

Gifts to the OAT Program Fund enhance educational access, ease financial barriers, and spark creative teaching. The program awards research funds to Rutgers instructors who make their courses more affordable by using low-cost materials, library content, or open educational resources. Program costs are low, yet the return for students is sizeable – more than $13M saved since 2016.

Beyond the more than $13 million in direct savings for Rutgers students through the OAT Program, faculty have reported fundamental shifts in their approach to course materials through their participation in OAT. Half (50%) of faculty who have participated in OAT have redesigned additional courses because of their participation in the program, sparking creative teaching as they translate course materials into a new open and accessible format.

The OAT Program awards Rutgers faculty:

  • $2,500 to replace high-cost course materials with open educational resources, library collections, or other free or low-cost materials for their courses
  • $3,500 to create and develop a new open-source textbook for use at Rutgers and beyond
