Since 1979, the Paul Robeson Galleries have championed artistic freedom, cultural democracy, and transnationalism in honor of Rutgers alumnus Paul Robeson. This year, we pay tribute to Jerry Gant, a pivotal figure in Newark’s artistic scene, whose creative practices inspire our programming. Gant’s innovative approach to art, which focused on upcycling and repurposing discarded materials, aligns beautifully with today’s sustainability trends. By transforming street detritus, secondhand clothes, and overlooked objects into meaningful art, he not only highlighted their histories but also fostered community connections.

Our programming, led by artist educators often linked to Gant, is entirely free, enhancing accessibility for all. Gant’s legacy as an artist and educator continues to shape Newark’s vibrant art landscape, ensuring his influence endures. Join us at the Robeson Galleries to celebrate artistic values and Gant's lasting impact through collaborative, diverse, and engaging art initiatives that foster change in our community.
