Elytis Chair Fund

Help establish a permanent Elytis Chair at Rutgers to honor Odysseas Elytis, the poet who won the 1979 Nobel Prize for Literature. This is a grass roots movement, funded by gifts from the community and spearheaded by a generous donation from the late Nikos Mouyiaris. Join our efforts.

The Elytis Chair is an integral component of the Modern Greek Studies Program (MGSP) that already exists at Rutgers. When we raise the required funds, we will attract a distinguished scholar to conduct research in Hellenic studies, teach exciting courses, and be the Director of the MGSP. The effort was started by the late Prof. Stathis Bourodimos and is carried out by the Rutgers Foundation and dedicated volunteers who devote their time reaching out to the Greek-American and Philhellene community. Unlike similar programs at other universities that are funded by major private foundations, our program is a grass roots effort, driven mainly by the community. The Fund benefited greatly by a generous donation from the late Cypriot philanthropist and grateful Rutgers alumnus Nikos Mouyiaris. We have established an Annual Mouyiaris Lecture by distinguished speakers from around the world to honor Mr. Mouyiaris’ memory and complete his vision of establishing the permanent Elytis Chair.
